All Blacks fullback Mils Muliaina will leave New Zealand at the end of the season and continue his career in Japan. The 94-test veteran signed a two-year deal with NTT Docomo and will start with the club next season.
Muiliaina, 30, said the decision was based around a new challenge and exploring a new playing environment.
"Once this season is over it will be time for something different," he said. "Japan itself offers a completely different culture and way of life that my entire family is looking forward to experiencing."
All Blacks coach Graham Henry praised Muliaina’s leadership and described him as "the best in the world in his position".
"Mils is a natural leader, he has tremendous respect of his peers and has helped considerably in the development of younger players. He has been a key member of the leadership group and has also captained the team when Richie has been injured," Henry said.
"Mils goes to Japan next year with the best wishes of everyone involved in the All Blacks."
Muliaina made his debut for the All Blacks against England in 2003 and jointly holds the team's test record with Richie McCaw with 94. His 32 test tries put him at eighth all-time.
A distinguished Super Rugby representative, Muliaina registered his 100th game last month and has starred for both the Blues and Chiefs.
