Security is set to be boosted for the second day of the Wellington Sevens following a pitch invader tackling a Samoan player on Friday.

Alatasi Tupou was taken down with a high tackle at Westpac Stadium by a man wearing only his underwear during the match against New Zealand which finished about 10pm.

The man was charged with assault and issued with a trespass notice banning him from the stadium for two years, Fairfax reported.

Security staff numbers would be increased by 20 on Saturday following a review.

But despite the upset, police were happy with crowd behaviour.

Eight arrests were made and 28 eviction notices handed out at the stadium, mainly for smuggling alcohol into the grounds.

Last year 76 people were evicted and 16 arrested.

Police operations Commander Inspector Simon Perry told Fairfax police had a zero tolerance toward those trying to smuggle alcohol into the event.

"Those caught smuggling alcohol into the stadium have had their Sevens tickets confiscated for day two as well."

"We gave plenty of warning that this was the consequence. However, some chose to ignore it."

In an effort to get fans to the stadium early, organisers offered cash prizes to reward those in their seats each day between 1pm and 3.30pm.

A parade of teams was held in central Wellington on Thursday.

New Zealand are the defending champions after beating England in the final last year and are currently joint top of the IRB Sevens series.
