Porn can ruin men's sexual performance

Simon West, MSN NZ

Watching pornography is a common practice for most men. Even blokes in loving relationships openly admit to a bit of a knuckle shuffle in front of the PC from time to time, but recent research suggests this practice could be destroying men's sex lives.

According to a report in US journal Psychology Today, consuming too much porn can lead to erectile dysfunction and leave men finding regular sexual practices less stimulating.

The report, called Porn-Induced Sexual Dysfunction is a Growing Problem, found that men in their 20s consider it 'normal' to be unable to perform for their partner. The loss of libido and erection strength is said to be caused by continuous over-stimulation of dopamine — the neurotransmitter that springs the body's reaction to sexual activity.

Internet pornography is believed to be the key reason why men are frequently responding poorly to traditional dopamine signals.

"Erotic words, pictures, and videos have been around a long while, but the Internet makes possible a never-ending stream of dopamine spikes," said Marnia Robinson, the author of the report.

"In some porn users, the response to dopamine is dropping so low that they can't achieve an erection without constant hits of dopamine via the internet."

Robinson said that with amorous material readily available online, many men would decline 'normal sex' and begin to panic when in a regular sexual situation.

Declining sex surely sounds ridiculous to most of us, but there’s nothing worse than a lack of passion in the bedroom — especially if your member isn't able to stand to attention.

If you’ve not been pulling your weight and satisfying your girl, you might want to rethink your porn intake. It may just be what's letting you down.
