Wellington police had a busy Saturday night, with sevens fans hitting the city's streets to celebrate New Zealand's victory in the annual tournament.

Acting Senior Sergeant Aidan Ellims says 52 arrests were made in the capital overnight, the majority for breaching the liquor ban and disorderly behaviour.

"That's certainly way above what we'd normally have in the cells for a weekend," he told NZ Newswire.

It was unfortunate that there was a high number of arrests, given everybody was out celebrating and having a good time, Acting Snr Sgt Ellims said.

"I think everybody has enjoyed the atmosphere and enjoyed the weekend. I mean the weather hasn't been the summer we're supposed to be having, but that hasn't really slowed people down," he said.

However, police have praised the behaviour of fans at the event.

Operation Commander Inspector Simon Perry says there were a total of six arrests and 40 evictions made at Westpac Stadium on Saturday.

Two of the arrests related to people running onto, or attempting to go onto, the playing field. A further 30 people were denied entry to the event due to intoxication and smuggling alcohol.

On the tournament's first day, Friday, eight arrests and 28 evictions were made at the stadium.
