Marina Erakovic's problems with her service game have continued but were not enough to stop the New Zealand tennis No.1 advancing to the second round of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston.

Erakovic overcame world No.125 Karolina Pliskova 6-2 6-4 despite a first serve percentage in the first set of 48 per cent.

It improved in the second set to 68 per cent but the tournament's 17th seed offered the 20-year-old Czech qualifier six chances to break her serve in the match.

Erakovic, ranked 45th in the world, managed to convert four of her 11 break point opportunities.

The 24-year will face Georgian Anna Tatishvili in the next round after she battled back to beat Netherland's Arantxa Rus 1-6 6-4 6-4.

Tatishvili is ranked 80th in the world.
